CONFIDANT Raises $2.1 Million for Mobile Chronic Disease Management Solutions
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - (Feb. 5, 2007) - CONFIDANT, a leading developer of mobile communication solutions for chronic disease management, raised $2.1 million.
The Series B funding brings the company's total financing to $5.1 million. In addition to CONFIDANT's existing investors, Honolulu-based Pacificap Group participated in this funding round and represents the first institutional money raised. CONFIDANT will use the financing for continued commercialization of its products, product development, business development and staff expansion.
"The latest infusion of capital provides CONFIDANT with a platform to expand our solutions and to increase awareness among healthcare professionals, insurance companies and government payers. We are gaining traction as we help address the cost of managing chronic diseases and improve the communication between patient and caregiver," said Bjorn Nordwall, president and chief operating officer of CONFIDANT.
Approximately 45 percent of Americans live with a chronic condition, and 20 percent live with two or more. The costs of chronic disease are crippling the healthcare system. The top 25 chronic illnesses account for 80 percent of healthcare spending. Lacking the tools to better proactively manage chronic disease, the U.S. healthcare system is structured to predominantly treat symptoms and react to events instead of enabling education and proactive disease management.
With CONFIDANT's technology, patients and caregivers establish more effective, real-time, two-way communications to help manage diseases. The patient and caregiver are able to view, through an Internet-based portal, accurate and complete data automatically uploaded from the patient's medical device through a mobile phone. Other devices on the market require a patient to manually enter and send data, increasing the chance of errors and omissions.
Based on their submitted data, customized graphical images and text messages designed to educate and motivate are automatically returned to the patients' mobile phones to keep them on track with the disease management process and remind them of important tasks. Messages can also be sent to the doctor if measurements are outside of pre-determined parameters.
