CONFIDANT Receives FDA Clearance

First FDA Cleared Mobile Phone-Based Solution to Communicate with Multiple Home Medical Devices

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (Jan. 10, 2007) - CONFIDANT, a leading developer of mobile communication solutions for chronic disease management, has received FDA market clearance for its second generation product - CONFIDANT 2.0.

In May 2005, CONFIDANT became the first company to receive clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a mobile phone-based system to communicate with multiple home medical devices.

CONFIDANT 2.0 includes significant user interface improvements and the ability to work with a broader group of home medical devices. With an initial focus on home diabetes management, the current offering is capable of collecting data from a range of popular glucose meters, weight scales and blood pressure devices.

"This clearance further strengthens the high standard CONFIDANT is establishing using wireless communication technology to address chronic disease management," said Bjorn Nordwall, president and chief operating officer for CONFIDANT. "We are now in a position to broaden our product offerings and continue to make progress toward improving the care of patients with chronic diseases."

With its diabetes platform in the market, CONFIDANT has been diligent in developing its products on a flexible and scalable architecture. Applications for obesity and asthma patients are currently under development.

Approximately 45 percent of Americans live with a chronic condition, and 20 percent live with two or more. The costs of chronic disease are crippling the healthcare system. The top 25 chronic illnesses account for 80 percent of healthcare spending. Lacking the tools to proactively manage chronic disease, the U.S. healthcare system is structured to predominantly treat symptoms and react to events instead of enabling education and proactive disease management.

With CONFIDANT's technology, patients and caregivers establish more effective, real-time, two-way communications. The patient and caregiver are able to view, through an Internet-based portal, accurate and complete data automatically uploaded from the patient's medical device through a mobile phone. Other devices on the market require a patient to manually enter and send data, increasing the chance of errors and omissions.

Based on their submitted data, customized graphical images and text messages designed to educate and motivate are automatically returned to the patients' mobile phones to keep them on track with the disease management process and remind them of important tasks. Messages can also be sent to the doctor if measurements are outside of pre-determined parameters.
